Golf Courses or Parklands?

City-owned golf courses should be opened to public parkland use during COVID-19. Let’s ask the City to slow down and consult the public before renewing multi-year contracts with the golf course operators. Council is on the brink of quietly renewing these contracts at the Sept. 30 Council meeting. Meanwhile, cities across North America are exploring greener uses for under-used and outdated golf courses. Restoring golf courses to parklands could be part of Toronto’s green recovery, but we need to ask for it.

The Toronto Field Naturalists wish to acknowledge this land through which we walk. For thousands of years it has been the traditional land of the Wendat, the Seneca, and most recently, the Mississauga of the Credit River. Today it is still the home to many Indigenous peoples from across Turtle Island and we are grateful to have the opportunity to be on this land.
